Growing tobacco is a time intensive crop that harms health and degrades the soil. She now has room to grow food for her family and her children have time to go to school. This year's World No Tobacco Day theme is 'Grow food, not tobacco' because tobacco growing increases food insecurity, harms the environment and the health of farmers and communities. The tobacco industry interferes with attempts to substitute tobacco growing, contributing to the global food crisis. This campaign encourages governments to end tobacco growing subsidies and use the savings to support farmers to switch to more sustainable crops that improve food security and nutrition.
