Ex-Dividend Dates Explained:
When can you expect your dividends to be paid out and when do you have to buy a certain stock in order to be paid in dividends. This all comes down to the Ex-Dividend date which is what we are talking about in today’s video.
Hey guys, if you are new here my name is JJ and this is the Dividend Freedom channel where on this channel I talk everything about dividend investing and documenting my own investing journey where I started a portfolio from scratch here on the channel and give updates every week on how the portfolio is growing over time. If that is something that interested you, hit that subscribe button.
There are a few dates you need to pay attention to in order to understand when you are eligible to receive a dividend payment from a company.
Now to help explain this we will be looking at the dividend tracker which is what I use to track my dividend income as well as analyze dividend stocks (link in description).
For this example, we will be looking at Apple and its 4 dates:
The first one is the Declared Date, this is simply when the board of directors got together and decided that they are going to pay a dividend and how much it is going to be.
Now the next date is the Ex-Dividend Date and this one is the most important. In order to be paid out a dividend payment from a stock, you need to own the stock before the ex dividend date. If you buy the stock on the exdividend date or after, you will not receive a dividend payment until the next dividend is declared.
So for example, Apple has a ex date of 2/04/2022. Therefore, you would need to buy Apple stock on or before 2/3/2022 in order to receive this dividend payout.
The next date is the record date. The date of record is the day on which the company checks its records to identify shareholders of the company. An investor must be listed on that date to be eligible for a dividend payout.
Finally we have the payment date. This is simply the day you will receive your dividend payment.
Now one thing to keep in mind here is a lot of people will try to buy stocks right before the ex date to receive the dividend payment then get out of the stock. There is a risk with this strategy bc if you look to sell the stock on the day of ex date or a day or two later, usually a dividend stocks price will fall due to the company paying out the dividend. Usually it bounces back but that is something to keep in mind if you plan on using that strategy. For me, I personally think it is best to just buy and hold for the long term.
