A routine traffic stop in Jonesboro, Arkansas, turned into a significant drug bust when officers encountered a red pickup truck with a dubious license plate. On the evening of March 27, 2023, around 5:49 PM, Officer Jacob Lowery initiated a stop near Dan Avenue and Willett Road after spotting the vehicle's homemade temporary license plate, which unsurprisingly did not match the vehicle. The situation escalated when the driver, 55-year-old Farrell Thomas from Trumann, admitted to not having a valid driver's license. The subsequent search of the vehicle revealed an assortment of illegal substances, including pills, methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Thomas, along with passengers Joseph Leslie Vangness, 42, and Bryce James, 33, both from Jonesboro, were arrested at the scene. The trio faces charges related to the possession of various drugs with intent to deliver. Additional charges include using fictitious tags, driving without a license, and lack of insurance, marking a comprehensive crackdown by local law enforcement on drug-related offenses and traffic violations.
The arrest of Farrell Thomas and his passengers involved multiple drug-related charges. Possession of various drugs with intent to deliver falls under Arkansas Code § 5-64-401, Possession of Controlled Substances with Purpose to Deliver, categorizing the intent to deliver any controlled substance as a felony. Charges for using fictitious tags and driving without a license are covered under Arkansas Code § 27-14-306, Improper use of evidences of registration, and Arkansas Code § 27-16-601, Driving Without a License, respectively. These statutes criminalize the use of false or fictitious license plates and operating a vehicle without a valid driver's license, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the legal response to traffic violations and drug offenses.
