With a mission to collect lunar samples, the mission commander was tasked with timing the craft's reentry to Earth's atmosphere. The sheer importance of this task cannot be overstated, with the slightest miscalculation risking everything from missing the atmosphere completely to being crushed by it. During this critical moment, the commander's NASA issued watch broke. Instead, it was the commander's personal watch, a prototype not approved by NASA for manned space flight, that was used to ensure the team's safe reentry. That watch was a Bulova, and while that original never did make a full production run, 50 years later, the brand is keeping that legend alive with their Lunar Pilot, a 45mm chronograph modeled after that original prototype. #bulova #lunarpilot #apollo15 |
