(WEHT) — Inside The Refuge Christian Church, an organization known as Love The 812 is hosting “Blessed With A Dress” and “Ties For Guys” on Sunday, and it is used to make a difference for high schoolers heading to the prom this spring. Tri-State teenagers and families could pick out formal wear free of charge. “What we want is for you — ladies and gentlemen — to be able to come and get a dress. You can get a matching necklace; they can get shoes, a handbag, flowers — however they want to complete it,” Love The 812 Director Karen DeTalente says. “And then the men — they’re able to get a suit, a vest, all free of charge, shoes, ties.” DeTalente also believes this is one way to show God’s love. “It’s amazing to be able to just provide these youth with this type of outfitting where they feel special at their prom events and be able to join in the fun with their other peers at school,” she adds. The event comes as Love The 812 also understands many of these formal wear pieces can top hundreds of dollars. “Maybe it is expensive to able to buy an outfit over 400 or $300. This is great to be able to say, ‘okay, we’ve had donation where people have bought brand new dresses that have a high ticket price of maybe three or $400,’ and they’re willing to donate it,” DeTalente says. “I think people feel special to be able to just put their self in these youth’s shoes again and go, ‘I remember prom and how special that was.'” Shannon Hart works with foreign exchange students who may not have the prom experience. Sunday marks the second time she has visited the store to help exchange students and others find formal wear and have a blast at prom. “This event has been amazing for my students,” Hart says. “I’m a former educator, so I know how important exchange perspectives are to have in the classroom. So, having to make this event that provides them the opportunity to be able to be part of prom and something in their countries that they don’t get is pretty, pretty phenomenal.” Hart also encourages those to donate their old dress wear to Love The 812 to keep the program going. Eyewitness News is told the organization will open its wardrobe again Sunday, April 28, between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. There are no criteria to shop.
