The successful bid gave the country a much-needed boost at a time when the Japanese people were pessimistic about the country’s future following decades of deflation. Billed as the Reconstruction Games, Tokyo 2020 also aims to support recovery efforts in the Tohoku region following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. However, the early euphoria did not last. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on unprecedented challenges for the host city. Despite all the uncertainties, athletes who have been training hard for Tokyo 2020 are determined to overcome any obstacles to be part of the historic Games.
