| Video Discription | For patients with thyroid cancer who have had surgery, radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment can help destroy remaining cancer cells. Common side effects of RAI include dry mouth, swelling and tenderness of the salivary gland, and temporary changes in taste. Other side effects include dry eyes and temporary fertility issues. These should resolve over time, says endocrine surgeon Masha Livhits, MD. Some patients wonder if they can get another cancer, such as leukemia, from the radioactive iodine treatments. Most studies have found less than a one percent chance of developing another cancer from the RAI. Each patient should work with their health care team to determine the risks and benefits of having radioactive iodine treatment.
