A special feature of Hanuman Jayanti is that according to some religious almanacs (panchāngs) the birthday of Hanuman falls on the fourteenth day (chaturdashi) in the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin, while according to others it falls on the full moon day in the bright fortnight of Chaitra. On this day in a Hanuman temple, spiritual discourses begin at dawn since Hanuman is believed to have been born during sunrise. During the time frame of birth, the spiritual discourse are halted and the offering of food (prasadam) is distributed to everyone. Devotees take bath early morning and offer puja to the idol of lord Hanuman, they keep fast and visit the temple to offer rice, flowers and prayers to the lord. They also offer red vermillion to lord Hanuman. This is done to serve your Dharma, which is Lord Ram or the life purpose for which you have taken birth. Your senses are like monkeys, who, if not trained, can make your mind totally distracted and fragmented. However, when trained, this monkey will be very powerful and will serve all your worthy desires. In the battle of Ramayana, when Lakshman was grievously injured by Indrajit’s weapon and was on the brink of death, Hanuman was asked to bring the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayan peaks to revive the dying prince. Unable to figure which herb was needed, Hanuman lifted the entire mountain and flew back to Lakshman’s aid. This is the power of the senses once they have been tamed. Ravana’s golden kingdom of Lanka signifies the illusionary castle of dreams in which the mind sometimes gets trapped. Hanuman was instrumental in destroying that castle and bringing the consciousness (Sita) back to her Dharma or Lord Rama to serve its life purpose.
