The decade leading up to the 1980s was marked with civil unrest, fierce activism and seismic cultural shifts, what Axelrod refers to as “a roiling environment for the emergence of new and exciting art forms.” These conditions gave rise to graffiti and street art, hip hop, fashion and new forms of expression that represented the raw realities of voices historically marginalized in the art canon. John Axelrod, the avant-garde Boston based collector, after being struck by the work of Martin Wong, embarked on a decade plus long hunt for best-in-class examples by Loisaida artists, such as David Wojnarowicz, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Blade, Crash, DONDI, Chris “Daze” Ellis, Futura 2000, and others who all defined American art in the 1980s.
