What is a finsta
Before we get into the topic, we'd just like to welcome you to News Views & interviews or acronym, NVI where we keep you up on the latest.
Most of us are aware of Instagram, the popular photo-sharing app that has us all taking filtered photos of our foods, fancies, and faces. Finsta is short for Finstagram, or “fake Instagram,” referring to an account made so that a user can lurk around Instagram, interacting with other accounts, in a more private way. These accounts can be used for good and bad, let's get into the details.
Instagram began in 2010. By 2015 this distinction between “real Instagram” and “fake Instagram” was already being observed. The images on a finsta are those that users don’t want to be associated with their own name or public persona, often to hide activity from parents, partners, or public institutions. lending anonymity to the Instagram account holder. These, are sometimes called “spam accounts,” but in all honesty, these are more often than not, troll accounts made for stalking when we wouldn't want others to know we are paying them any attention at all. Everyone wants to appear quote "unbothered".
finsta accounts can be useful considering the newest Instagram feature, allowing users to see just who has visited their page. Courtesies of keeping up with tiktok, I'm sure.
Many IG users are not just checking and maintaining one Instagram account a day, they are consistently monitoring and updating two or more accounts. One public and open to all, and one for more trusted individuals. Having a Finsta effectively gets rid of the stressful element of Instagram or, fear of showing ones authentic self to the public and corresponding judgment.
While some use finstagram accounts to stalk exes and their new partners, others use finsta for the not-so-perfect parts of their lives,” seeking to display their more authentic selves to a select group of others.
On a person's regular or real Instagram account, is a perfect, edited collage of moments with high school friends, fraternity brothers, and family vacations. Perfectly curated suggesting that they are quote "living, their best life."
Many people use Instagram to showcase an "ideal" life to their followers, even if that life is a poor representation of reality. This is not the place to upload embarrassing photos, or selfies taken right after waking up. Many places of employment in addition to running background checks, are also running social media checks, to see if this is the person they want representing their business or brand.
However, Instagram's mirage of perfect, well-filtered lives doesn't always equal happiness. One recent study, found a correlation, between following strangers and depression symptoms such as fearfulness, loneliness, and fatigue. Instagram users can feel like their lives aren't good enough compared to everyone else's perfectly edited lives something studies have also found among facebook users as well.
So maybe Finsta's aren't such a bad idea after all. In the end, a Finsta is a chance to share a more authentic side of yourself with friends.
Ironically, a "Fake Instagram"could be a solution to feelings of inadequacy on the platform. Encouraging authenticity is typically a postive thing. Unfortunately, this can make blocking others from your regular account a difficulty. Again, some finsta accounts are simply troll accounts looking for trouble in disguise. Consider making your real instagram account private to avoid stalking and trolls if having a large following, isn't, important to you.
Creating a Finsta is simple, just create a unique username that doesn't use your real first or last name. Also, you'll want to make sure you don't use a real photo of yourself as your profile picture. You want this account to be impossible to find unless you've shared the username.
