| Video Discription | The novel coronavirus disease outbreak has spread rapidly in Kerala in the last 5 days. More than 250 people are infected there, raising fears of community transmission. The state govt plans rapid tests through kits from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Rapid antibody tests can check for pathogens that might have entered the human body. Results are delivered in 30 minutes; the tests are also cost-effective. They can be used to diagnose community transmission, but are not prescribed by ICMR . ICMR maintains patients should take polymerase chain reaction test even if rapid test results are negative. Kerala has been using RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase) chain reaction tests. These use nasal or throat swab samples. RT-PCR tests check for the presence of virus in DNA and takes 12-24 hours. The rapid tests will be used as screening tests; PCR tests will be used for suspected positive cases. |
